What is an e-bike rescue and what is covered?
Bike rescue is a type of insurance you can add on when making your purchase. The $10 bike rescue fee covers: flat tires and electronics failures within a 7.5-mile radius of West Maui. Taking the bike north of Honolua Bay or south of Olowalu is considered OUTSIDE the West Maui boundaries and is not included. Please keep in mind: the bike rescue insurance must be purchased BEFORE your ride. If you encounter an issue outside a 7.5-mile radius, an additional fee will be charged based on the distance. Flat tires with Kiawes are very common on Maui, having a bike brought to you is well worth the investment of $10 per occurrence. If the bike runs out of battery charge outside the West Maui boundaries, it is not covered under bike rescue. Please refer to better energy saving tips. Adding Bike rescue to your reservation is highly recommended.
How long will the battery last?
Typically, you can expect non-premium e-bikes to last between 12 - 30 miles on a single charge, and premium e-bikes to last between 30 - 60 miles. This will depend on the weight of the rider, how the bike gear system is used by the rider, the amount of pedal assistance used, the type of bike and the type of terrain (hilly vs. non-hilly). To attain the maximum range, make sure to use the gear system and apply a lower level of pedal assist. Especially when going uphill, make sure you are on a lower gear. If you run out of battery, the beauty is you will still be able to pedal and use gears and ride like a regular bike. If you are using a bike for more than a day, we recommend charging the battery each night, as it may take several hours to get to a full charge. We will show you how to remove and charge the battery during your orientation. If you are renting bikes for longer range and riding towards the north side of West Maui, employ energy saving techniques.
Do you have any other important recommendations before my ride?
We will be sending you links to resources: Exploring Maui by Bike, route ideas, e-bike rental tips, and a pre-programmed route's app. Please review them and make sure to have the pre-programmed routes app downloaded before your ride. These resources will help obtain the best overall experience. Early reservations are encouraged to avoid disappointments. On the day of the rental it is very important to pay close attention to e-bike orientation and learn battery energy saving techniques, understand rules of the road, wear a helmet during your ride, and keep your bike safe by locking it when not riding.
Bike Sizing Chart
Beginner Riders please consider the following:
Ask for an evaluation test ride before renting the e-bike. Being able to properly balance, get on, get off a bike and ride making controlled tight turns under your own power as well as pedal assist is critical.
If you are not confident following your evaluation test ride either cancel before the 24 hours or switch to a tandem bike. You can also rent an e-bike for 2 hours to practice before the group ride to get comfortable.
Rent a Tandem bike (2 people on one bike) utilizing an experienced rider as the lead rider.
Hire a guide to take you on a tandem.
